In an effort to enhance the education system, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro has issued a strong admonition to the heads of consistently underperforming schools, particularly those categorized as ‘Hope’ schools. This initiative aims to tackle persistent issues that have affected student outcomes, especially among Year 8 students.

During his address to Parliament on Monday, Mr. Radrodro emphasized that these schools will be subject to rigorous monitoring in the coming years as part of the Ministry’s strategy to boost educational results. He stated, “We are closely monitoring heads of schools whose institutions fall under the Hope school category, which have consistently underperformed over the past three years,” highlighting the accountability that school leaders must uphold for enhancing their institutional performance.

While the Minister did not disclose the specific number of schools involved, his comments came in light of troubling Year 8 results nationally. The Minister pointed out concerning pass rates in core subjects, including English, which stood at 57 percent over the last three years, and Mathematics, considerably lower at 41 percent.

To address these challenges, he mentioned that the Ministry is actively reviewing both the teaching materials and the structure of the Mathematics assessments to better serve students’ needs. Additionally, a comprehensive curriculum review is underway, focusing on aligning educational content with 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking and problem-solving.

Mr. Radrodro also noted a notable increase in Year 9 enrolment, which can be credited to the $200 Back to School assistance program. He highlighted the Ministry’s dedication to improving access to education, particularly for students in maritime and remote rural areas, stressing that all students deserve equal opportunities for success.

He encouraged parents or guardians experiencing difficulties with enrolment to reach out to district offices for support.

In summary, the Ministry of Education is taking significant steps to rectify underachievement in schools while ensuring that all students, regardless of their geographical location, have access to quality education. This renewed focus and commitment could lead to promising changes in the educational landscape, fostering a brighter future for the students involved.
