Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has announced plans to tackle teacher absenteeism following the fourth week of the school year. During a visit to Valelawa Primary School in Dreketi, Macuata, he observed that some students are still attending classes in tents due to ongoing infrastructural challenges.
Radrodro acknowledged that teacher absenteeism is a recurring issue at the start of each academic term, citing that various factors contribute to this phenomenon, including genuine circumstances. He emphasized that the education system typically stabilizes after the initial weeks, which is when the government will take necessary actions to address attendance issues.
The Minister explained that teacher migrations and transfers to new schools, along with the enrollment adjustments of students, also play a role in the decreased teacher presence during the early weeks of school. In addressing concerns over Year 13 enrollment, he confirmed that all students who successfully complete the Year 12 external examination should be granted the opportunity to advance to Year 13, irrespective of strict entry marks established by some schools.
