The Minister of Education, Aseri Radrodro, has issued a strong warning to school leaders of consistently underperforming institutions, especially those classified in the ‘Hope’ school category. This initiative is part of a wider strategy aimed at tackling persistent issues within the education sector.

During a recent Parliament address, Mr. Radrodro emphasized the need for rigorous monitoring of schools that have demonstrated a decline in performance over the past three years. The Ministry of Education is particularly focused on enhancing Year 8 student outcomes. “We are paying close attention to heads of schools in the Hope category as we strive to elevate their performance,” he stated.

While specific numbers of the schools involved remain undisclosed, the call for accountability follows alarming national pass rates among Year 8 students, particularly in core subjects. The Minister noted the pass rate for English languished at 57 percent over the last three years, while Mathematics recorded a troubling 41 percent.

“We are diligently working to address these issues,” Mr. Radrodro affirmed, indicating that the Ministry is re-evaluating both teaching materials and the Mathematics examination structure to better support learners. A comprehensive review of the curriculum is in progress, aimed at aligning educational content with 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking and problem-solving.

Moreover, Mr. Radrodro highlighted the increase in enrolment for Year 9 students, partly due to the $200 Back to School assistance initiative. The Ministry is also enhancing its outreach efforts to maritime and remote schools to ensure equity in educational opportunities across both urban and rural areas. “Parents or guardians experiencing challenges with enrolment should reach out to our district offices for support,” he advised.

This proactive approach to improving educational standards reflects a commitment to fostering student success and ensuring that every child has access to the tools necessary for thriving in today’s world.

Overall, the response from the Ministry of Education indicates a determination to address the shortcomings in the education system and a hopeful outlook for improving student outcomes in the coming years.
