Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has addressed the rising concerns surrounding the increasing fees imposed by parent-teacher associations (PTAs), emphasizing the necessity for any fee hikes to receive prior approval from the respective schools. His remarks come in response to a recent incident in Suva, where a school raised its levy fee dramatically from $30 to $90.

Mr. Radrodro clarified that the decision regarding levy fees is made by the executive members of the PTAs, rather than the Ministry of Education. He highlighted the importance of transparency in these decisions, stating, “Every decision made by the members needs to be transparent.”

The Minister reiterated that the ministry supports free education and is implementing measures to encourage PTAs to hold annual general meetings, which have not been conducted regularly in the past. He underscored that members of the PTA are accountable and have a responsibility to communicate effectively with both parents and teachers involved in the association.

This initiative to promote transparency and accountability is expected to foster greater trust between parents, teachers, and school administrations, ultimately benefiting the educational environment. Mr. Radrodro’s commitment to these principles signals a proactive approach to managing school fees and ensuring that all stakeholders have a role in financial decisions affecting their educational communities.

In summary, the Minister’s focus on transparency and proper governance within PTAs is a hopeful step towards enhancing collaboration and trust among parents, teachers, and school officials.
