The Ministry of Employment is urging employers to ensure that workers receive their public holiday pay during the Easter public holidays. Minister Agni Deo Singh emphasized that the Employment Relations Act 2007 mandates compensation for workers based on the hours they would have worked had it not been a public holiday.

In his statement, Singh clarified that employees who work on Good Friday, Easter Saturday, or Easter Monday are entitled to double pay. Those who do not work on the public holiday but were present for the regular working days before and after the holiday are entitled to single public holiday pay. Workers unable to work the regular days before or after the holiday must provide a valid reason or a medical certificate to be eligible for public holiday pay.

Singh stressed the importance of both employers and employees understanding their rights and responsibilities under the Employment Relations Act. To reinforce compliance, the Ministry’s Compliance Team will conduct checks at workplaces to ensure adherence to these regulations and to confirm that workers receive their rightful earnings.

This initiative comes in line with ongoing efforts by the government to protect workers’ rights and ensure fair compensation during holidays. Earlier initiatives have included announcements regarding early salary payments for civil servants to support their financial well-being during festive seasons, reflecting the government’s commitment to fostering a supportive work environment.

Employers are encouraged to reach out to their local Ministry of Employment Office for any clarifications and should refer to the amended Wages Regulations and the Employment Relations (National Minimum Wage) (Amendment) Regulations 2024, effective from April 1, 2025.

This positive approach by the government not only aims to safeguard worker rights but also promotes a culture of appreciation and recognition within the workforce, enhancing overall morale during significant public holiday periods.
