Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran has urged Fijians to reflect on the profound values of Easter, emphasizing the need to support the most vulnerable members of society during this significant period. She highlighted that many individuals, particularly children and elderly people living on the streets, require our compassion and support.

Ms. Kiran called for a holistic approach to addressing the challenges faced by these vulnerable groups. She noted, “My only ask this Easter is for us to look at how we are living the values that we are talking about this weekend.” By invoking the parable of the prodigal son, she encouraged communities to be open and accepting of those seeking support, asking whether families and communities are prepared to welcome those who have strayed back home.

The Minister expressed a strong desire to see genuine acts of kindness and compassion, stating, “We need to question our values and ask how willing we are to embrace them when we talk about loving your neighbor as you love yourself.” She reiterated that while the government will do its part, the collective effort of all sectors in the community is essential to effectively support those in need.

This message resonates with similar calls from other leaders this Easter season. Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad has also emphasized the importance of unity and compassion amid the societal challenges Fiji faces, including rising substance abuse issues impacting youth. The Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, has echoed these sentiments by highlighting the significance of sacrifice and collective action during Easter.

In light of these messages, there is a renewed hope that the spirit of Easter will inspire Fijians to come together, fostering a supportive and compassionate society. The collective commitment to addressing the needs of the vulnerable showcases the potential for positive change and renewal within Fiji’s diverse communities.

With these empowering calls to action resonating throughout the nation, there lies optimistic anticipation that through kindness and community support, Fijians can create a brighter, more united future for all.
