Former SODELPA general secretary Lenatasi Duru has taken a significant step by joining forces with members of the G16 Opposition to explore the establishment of a new political party. This initiative follows his resignation from SODELPA in December 2022, triggered by the party’s coalition with The People’s Alliance and the National Federation Party (NFP) to govern.

Duru’s concerns regarding the current Coalition government primarily revolve around the inclusion of former FijiFirst parliamentarians in key ministerial roles. He highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the Coalition and the political maneuvering necessary for maintaining government stability, remarking, “Where the Prime Minister is coming from, he needs to secure his position, especially with Government constantly under threat.”

Reflecting on SODELPA’s sacrifices during coalition negotiations, Duru expressed doubts about the current leadership’s strategic direction. He asserts the necessity for a new political vision, emphasizing the need to “offer something different,” underscoring politics as a calculated game.

Addressing the iTaukei community’s concerns about unmet expectations from the previous FijiFirst government, he indicated that the new party’s manifesto and constitution would comprehensively address these issues. Duru believes that effective utilization of resources and financial gains from past administrations is crucial in serving the community’s interests, stating, “We just need to take time in making sure that those resources are utilized effectively.”

Duru’s venture aligns with similar initiatives among G16 members, including Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, who have also announced plans to form a new political party. This collective movement represents a notable shift in Fiji’s political landscape, potentially generating renewed democratic engagement as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.

In summary, Duru’s actions reflect an evolving political environment in Fiji, bringing forth opportunities for citizens to engage with fresh ideas and perspectives. This initiative may usher in a more participatory and accountable governance framework, addressing pressing community concerns and fostering hope for a responsive political process moving forward. As Fiji prepares for the upcoming elections, there is optimism that these developments will invigorate democracy and improve representation for all Fijians.
