Nabala Secondary School, the sole institution hosting a drum band in the Northern Division, has recently upgraded its musical instruments for the first time in 16 years. The Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee contributed $8,000, which covers the purchase of four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums.

Principal Epi Raikivi expressed his enthusiasm and gratitude for the donation on behalf of the school’s 14-member band, comprising hostel students from Years Nine to 13, who come from 11 different villages. Raikivi noted that the Fiji Police Force had previously donated a drum set to the school in 2008, which has since been repaired and reused for performances.

He took a moment to commend Master Seru Tuidravutu, who has been with the band since 2012. Tuidravutu played a key role in securing this important equipment with the assistance of the festival committee.

Raikivi mentioned that the band has been a part of the festival’s entertainment lineup for five years. Despite the departure of the band’s teacher earlier this year, his guidance was crucial in obtaining the new instruments.

Located about 33 kilometers from Labasa Town, the band proudly wears light blue and navy blue uniforms and regularly performs for other schools, organizations, and community events.

Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s dedication to community engagement and music education. She explained that this donation reflects their commitment to enhancing skills and supporting music education in the region. Ibrahim revealed that the festival had previously provided $5,000 worth of equipment last year and has now added another $3,000 worth, showcasing a long-term commitment to supporting local schools.
