Police in the Northern Division have arrested five individuals, including a 50-year-old businessman, in connection with drug-related offenses over the past two days. This update was provided by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu.
On Friday, December 27, authorities conducted a search in Naweni Village, Savusavu, where they discovered branches of what is believed to be marijuana hanging inside a residence. As a result, a male suspect was taken into custody, and the dried leaves were collected for further analysis.
The following day, police apprehended four additional suspects in various locations throughout Labasa. Notably, in Tuatua, the businessman was found in possession of two sachets of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana, wrapped in aluminum foil. A 20-year-old male student from Batinivuruwai, Bua, was also found with a sachet of similar contents.
In Naduna Settlement, law enforcement seized several items from a 55-year-old farmer and a 35-year-old woman, including a sealed plastic bag, a sachet, and a jar containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana. All seized substances have been submitted for analysis, with results pending.
ACP Driu confirmed that police will ramp up drug raids and special operations throughout the festive season, emphasizing their commitment to combating drug-related issues in the community.
This proactive approach from the police demonstrates their determination to ensure public safety during a time often associated with increased substance abuse. The ongoing efforts to curb drug activity highlight the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement.
