The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is preparing for a challenging matchup against the Hurricanes in the second round of the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific clash this weekend. After narrowly losing to the ACT Brumbies 36-32 in their opening match, the Drua aims to improve their breakdown management to avoid similar pitfalls against a tough Hurricanes team.

In their previous match, the Drua struggled in the latter stages, particularly with turnovers, as demonstrated by Brumbies flanker Luke Reimer’s decisive late contributions. Drua head coach Glen Jackson highlighted the need for his team to bolster their confidence while acknowledging the challenge posed by the Hurricanes’ formidable loose forwards, which include Brad Shields, Peter Lakai, and Du’Plessis Kirifi.

“Maintaining belief is crucial for us. We need to focus on securing a win on the road,” Jackson said. He emphasized that the breakdown area will be paramount, noting the Hurricanes’ strong physical presence just like the Brumbies. Jackson also reflected on the lessons learned from their opener, mentioning that earning a bonus point could significantly impact their Super Rugby campaign.

Despite the loss, Jackson took pride in debutants Ponipate Loganimasi and Isoa Tuwai, who showed promise in their first outing. However, the team is dealing with some injury concerns, as flanker-turned-lock Vilive Miramira sprained his ankle and Iosefo Masi aggravated a hamstring injury during the match.

Captain Tevita Ikanivere commended his team for their determination despite being reduced to 13 men at one point during the match. He expressed the need to regroup and improve for their upcoming fixture against the Hurricanes.

In a wider context, while the defending champions, Blues, faced a defeat against the Chiefs, teams like the Western Force managed to secure a comeback win, illustrating the unpredictability and excitement the season holds. This weekend’s match at McLean Park in Napier will be a crucial indicator of the Drua’s ability to compete against top teams, serving as a platform for growth as they advance through the season.

This upcoming match not only represents a significant challenge for the Drua but also an opportunity for redemption. Fans can remain optimistic as the team builds on the resilience displayed in their opener, aiming for improvement and success in their Super Rugby journey.
