The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has officially announced the signing of Wallabies scrumhalf Issak Fines-Leleiwasa, who joins the franchise following his tenure at the Western Force. Fines-Leleiwasa has played an impressive 45 matches for the Force and 11 for the ACT Brumbies, showcasing his skills in the Super Rugby Pacific.

In a statement from the club, Fines-Leleiwasa shared his enthusiasm about connecting with his Fijian roots, referencing his father’s connection to the village of Vatani, Kaba in Tailevu. He expressed his excitement about becoming part of the Drua family, saying, “A new chapter for me and my family, being a part of the Drua family will be special not only with the club but also the Fans, I can’t wait for this next challenge.”

Fines-Leleiwasa’s signing positions him for potential selection for the Flying Fijians, although he is currently bound by a three-year international stand-down period that does not conclude until October 2026. He recently earned his first cap for the Wallabies against France in 2023 and has since participated in six Tests for the Australian national team.

Drua head coach Glen Jackson praised Fines-Leleiwasa, describing him as a strong leader and an exceptional player, stating, “Issak is a good leader and an outstanding rugby player. He will help to lead our team with Frank, Simi and young Philip; it’s an important position for us, and we are lucky to have international quality players.”

The signing of Fines-Leleiwasa reflects the Drua’s ongoing efforts to enhance their squad, building a mix of experienced players and rising talents. This move is part of a broader trend within the team, as they look to strengthen their lineup with quality signings, similar to their recent acquisition of Olympic silver medalist Ponipate Loganimasi. With such additions, the Fijian Drua is poised for an exciting season ahead, bringing together a blend of talent and experience that can lead the team to greater heights.

This strategic recruitment approach aims not only to improve team performance on the field but also to foster community and pride among fans and aspiring athletes in Fiji.
