The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is gearing up for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby competition with plans to assemble a formidable squad. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes has indicated that the team is focusing on strengthening two key positions: No.6 and No.8.
Gibbes emphasized that the team will not explore shifting Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, also known as ‘Big T,’ into those roles, as there are alternative players in mind for these critical positions. “We probably won’t look at that, but we have to be agile in this competition,” he stated, highlighting the importance of adaptability in the upcoming season.
The Drua has welcomed back flanker Joseva Tamani, who has returned from a brief tenure with the French club Colomiers. At 27 years old, Tamani is recognized as a strong addition to the team, potentially stepping into one of the required roles based on his previous 13 appearances during the 2022 season. Known for his speed and agility on the field, Tamani excels at capitalizing on loose balls and making significant plays.
Additionally, young talent Isoa Tuwai, who has been impressive in the Skipper Competition and Farebrother while playing for Suva Rugby, is expected to make an impact as well. His journey from inside centre to flanker has caught the attention of fans, and Gibbes is optimistic about his potential contributions.
Gibbes expressed confidence in the recruitments made, stating, “Well, we’ve recruited Tamani back in and young Tuwai has come through the academy and they are pretty good players.” He further noted the versatility of players who are capable of filling multiple positions as they look to reinforce their lineup.
Having reached the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals for two consecutive years, the Drua remains committed to hard work as they aim to enhance their chances in the upcoming season. They are also preparing to participate in the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, from January 16-18 next year. Several aspiring young players, including Isikeli Rabitu, Philip Baselala, Aisea Nawai, and Simeli Tuiteci, are eager to secure spots on the Drua 7s team.
Currently, the Drua is taking a break to spend time with their loved ones and is looking forward to resuming training in the New Year.
This preparation is a great opportunity for the team to reassess and strengthen their strategies while keeping an eye on the promising young talent that could shape the future of Fijian rugby. The combination of seasoned players like Tamani and enthusiastic newcomers such as Tuwai bodes well for the Drua’s potential success.
