Fijian Drua coach Glen Jackson has voiced his disappointment regarding the three-week suspension of young forward Motikiai Murray, who has been in exceptional form this season. Recently named to the Super Rugby Pacific Team of the Week, Murray has been instrumental in the Drua’s performances, but was sidelined after receiving a penalty for a dangerous tackle during a match against the Brumbies.
Jackson called the incident ‘unfortunate,’ especially as Murray had just returned to play following a head injury assessment. He remarked, “It wasn’t great from Mott. He put his hand up straight away, but it was a tackle that happened towards the end of the game.”
With Murray set to miss their upcoming clash against the Western Force on March 23, 2025, the Drua will have to adapt their forward configuration. Despite this setback, Coach Jackson remains hopeful that Murray will learn from this experience and come back even stronger.
This situation is part of a broader movement in rugby towards enforcing stricter penalties for dangerous plays, which reflects a commitment to player safety. Instances involving other players, such as Api Koroisau and Hoskins Sotutu, highlight the league’s emphasis on maintaining high safety standards.
While Murray’s absence may pose a challenge for the Drua, it also represents an opportunity for other squad members to showcase their talents and contribute to the team’s success. Jackson believes this situation could enhance resilience within the group, fostering a spirit of collaboration as they aim to elevate their performance.
As fans await to see how the Drua navigate this adversity and which players rise to the occasion, there is a sense of optimism that the team will unite and tackle this challenge head-on, embodying a collective determination moving forward.
