"Urgent Call to Address Fiji's Alarming School Dropout Crisis"

Dropout Dilemma: Tackling Fiji’s Urgent Education Crisis

Opposition MP Hem Chand has urgently addressed the concerning rise in school dropout rates, calling on the Education Ministry to adopt innovative strategies to counter this significant issue. His comments were prompted by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s parliamentary address, which highlighted worrying statistics from the Ministry of Education.

In 2023, more than 1,162 students left school before reaching Year Eight, marking a dramatic 34 percent increase from the previous year’s figure of 755. This represents the highest dropout rate in five years, according to Chand. He stressed that this alarming trend indicates fundamental flaws within the current education system, especially following the free education initiative established by the prior government in 2014.

Chand identified several barriers contributing to the dropout crisis, including insufficient transportation and an uptick in drug-related activities among students. He urged the government to focus on identifying these root causes and to prioritize this issue to avert potential negative repercussions, such as an increase in youth crime and more children begging on the streets.

The previous government had seen a reduction in dropout rates through its Free Education Grant and Transport Assistance programs, underscoring the need for immediate action and effective strategies to address today’s educational challenges.

He emphasized the necessity for collaboration among educators, parents, and communities to foster an environment that promotes student retention. Chand expressed optimism that through united efforts, the government can tackle these critical issues and enhance educational outcomes for Fiji’s youth.

This rising trend not only highlights the urgency for policymakers to act but also presents an opportunity for community involvement in ensuring every child has access to quality education and the chance to achieve their potential.
