The Labasa Traffic Police, in collaboration with the Land Transport Authority of Fiji, have initiated a campaign focused on raising self-awareness among road users regarding the critical importance of road safety. This initiative aims to promote a culture of responsibility and accountability among all road users, which is seen as essential for driving behavioral changes that could lead to a reduction in road accidents and save lives.
Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, Deputy Divisional Police Commander North, emphasized that the campaign will employ a targeted awareness approach during routine traffic stops, as well as through dedicated awareness sessions. The campaign is currently being piloted in Labasa, with plans to expand it across the entire Northern Division, amid rising concerns about road accidents and fatalities.
In 2024 alone, the Northern Division recorded 13 road fatalities, with Labasa accounting for 4 of those cases. Additionally, Seaqaqa had 3 cases, Savusavu recorded 4, and Nabouwalu and Taveuni each documented 1 case. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to enhance road safety in the region.
The Labasa Taxi Association also extended its support to the police and the Land Transport Authority in launching this important campaign. By fostering a sense of shared responsibility and increasing awareness, this initiative aims to create safer road conditions for everyone.
This campaign is a hopeful step toward reducing road accidents and fatalities, and it highlights the critical role that community partnerships play in enhancing public safety. Through ongoing education and awareness, there is a strong potential for positive change on the roads in Fiji.
