The Western Seniors Open took place yesterday at the Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, attracting some of the finest senior golfers from the region. Sponsored by Kriz Signage and Five Squares, the tournament was marked by intense competition, particularly as James Krishna clinched the overall title after a gripping playoff against Rajesh Prasad and Ashok Goundar. All three players ended the 18-hole round with a score of 78, leading to a dramatic tiebreaker where Krishna emerged victorious.
Vili Leqa also shone brightly during the event, winning the overall net category with an impressive score of 67. Meanwhile, in the A Grade division, Rajesh Prasad demonstrated resilience by bouncing back from his playoff loss to secure the top spot with a net score of 70, closely followed by Salen Naidu, who finished on the same score but was edged out on countback. Roy Ugra completed the A Grade podium with a net score of 71.
The tournament saw a robust turnout of 62 participants, showcasing a diversity of skill across various age categories, including separate divisions for players below 50 years. Golf Fiji President Amitesh Chandra expressed gratitude towards the sponsors and participants, emphasizing the event’s role in reinforcing Denarau’s status as a premier venue for senior golf in Fiji.
This year’s Open is a continuation of the growing trend of organized senior golf events in Fiji. Such tournaments not only highlight the talent and competitive spirit of aging golfers but also promote social interaction and wellbeing, proving that age does not define one’s passion for the sport. As seen in previous competitions, the involvement of senior golfers like Prasad reflects a broader shift towards inclusivity and active participation in the golfing community, ensuring the future remains bright for golf in the region.
