The 81st Dakshina India Andhra Sangam of Fiji Convention Sports Tournament wrapped up with some tension on the final day, highlighted by a protest in the open division. In a competitive atmosphere, Samabula claimed victory over Tavua with a score of 2-1 in the first semi-final, while Lomawai outperformed Gallau with a convincing 4-2 win in the second semi-final.
The controversy arose when Tavua contested that Samabula had fielded a North Indian player. However, after a thorough review of registration documents and ID cards, the tournament committee upheld Samabula’s eligibility. Tensions escalated when Tavua’s players staged a sit-in protest on the field before the final, but they were subsequently asked to leave by the committee.
In the Masters Division, Vaqia secured a solid victory against Ba, winning the final match 3-0. Netball also saw competitive gameplay, with Ba defeating Lautoka 20-11 and Navo topping Tavua 14-2 in the semi-finals, leading to Ba’s eventual 11-7 win over Navo in the final match. Additionally, the Tug of War event captured attention as Navo clinched victory against Lomawai in a thrilling finish.
Games Committee Chairman Nilesh Naidu commended the event’s organization and flow, despite the earlier protest. “The weather was great, and we are hopeful that next year’s competition will be even better, fostering an exciting atmosphere for this convention,” he noted.
This tournament not only showcased intense sportsmanship but also a spirit of community among participants, with high hopes for future events in this rich sporting tradition.
