The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat has announced the appointment of Dr. Salome Taufa as the new Director of Governance and Engagement. In her position, she will be instrumental in guiding the executive leadership and overseeing the secretariat’s political, governance, and engagement initiatives.
Dr. Taufa expressed her gratitude and excitement for this opportunity, highlighting the meaningful nature of her work in serving the Pacific region through the Forum Secretariat. She emphasized her eagerness to contribute to the collaborative efforts among the secretariat and its member states, focusing on advancing shared regional priorities.
Having previously acted in this role for over a year, Dr. Taufa has cultivated a deep understanding of the responsibilities and potential of this position. Her extensive background across various sectors, including fisheries, education, and economic development, equips her to integrate these experiences meaningfully into her new role.
A significant focus of Dr. Taufa’s work will center around the implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. As part of this effort, leaders are prioritizing a review of regional systems to ensure they effectively address evolving global challenges such as climate change, security, and geopolitical shifts. Dr. Taufa emphasized the importance of adapting while remaining committed to Pacific values and leadership.
Additionally, she will be pivotal in supporting the execution of decisions made during the annual Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meetings, working closely with the Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP). Her leadership will underscore the regional strength derived from collaboration, guiding both internal and external engagements with international partners and agencies.
Dr. Taufa joined the Forum in 2019 and has held several key roles, including Economics Advisor and Acting Director. She previously served in senior positions within the Tongan government, contributing significantly to economic policy and investment reforms.
This appointment not only strengthens the leadership at the Pacific Islands Forum but also reflects a broader commitment to fostering cooperation and resilience in the face of regional challenges, instilling hope for the continued growth and unity of the Pacific Islands.
