After a decade-long hiatus, Downtown FC from Nadroga is set to make a triumphant return to the Cecil’s National Regional Club Championship (NCC), with the ambitious goal of winning their first-ever title.
Club secretary Numal Krishna expressed the team’s optimism and determination as they prepared to compete today. He conveyed that spirits were high within the camp, with the players eager to secure the NCC title. “We know it is not an easy task, but the morale is high, and the boys are looking forward to winning the NCC title,” he stated.
Numal highlighted that the club’s resurgence is the result of the hard work from the president, executive members, players, and their families, all of whom have played a crucial role in bringing Downtown FC back to a championship level. Under the guidance of coach Munen Krishna, the team features an impressive roster, including experienced district representatives like goalkeeper Sakeo Tagenaca and players Samuela Sacere, Ravinesh Reddy, and Abhishek Ram. Their combined experience and skills are expected to bolster the team’s chances in the tournament.
Downtown FC will kick off its NCC journey against Lautoka’s Rival FC today at 3 PM at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. The championship will host eight teams from grassroots clubs across Fiji, all competing for the prestigious title. Downtown FC is placed in Group A alongside Rivals FC, Buiduna FC, and Nakasi Police FC, while Group B will include Flying Arrows, Blues FC, Friends United, and North Pole FC.
This comeback is not only a testament to the resilience of Downtown FC but also signals a positive revival of grassroots football in Fiji. The enthusiastic support from the community and the foundation built by the club’s dedicated members offer an inspiring story as the team aims for glory in this championship.
