The Dominion Brothers Youth rugby team is preparing for the upcoming McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s tournament, which will be held from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Team manager Manasa Moto highlighted this event as a crucial opportunity for the young players to gain exposure and showcase their skills in a competitive environment.
As they approach the tournament, the team has entered its second week of training, and Moto expressed confidence in their preparedness, stating, “The players are aware of what’s required from them.” However, challenges such as food logistics, transportation difficulties, and limited sponsorship persist. Despite these obstacles, the resilience of the Dominion Brothers shines through, bolstered by the financial support from senior players currently competing overseas, who contribute funds to support their younger teammates.
The team’s objective is clear: they aim to advance to the Cup final and defend their title. For many players, rugby represents not just a sport but a pathway to personal growth and financial stability, particularly for those who have left school. Moto emphasized, “Rugby is an avenue that can help these players earn a living and support their families,” emphasizing the significant impact the sport has on their lives.
Training sessions focus on instilling discipline and understanding the evolving rules of sevens rugby, with an emphasis on fitness and skill improvement. The team will compete in Pool A against notable rivals, including Tuva Youth, Pacific Nomads, and Nauru rugby.
In anticipation of the tournament, Moto has encouraged local families and the community to come out and support the team, reinforcing unity and spirit, which are essential values in youth sports.
The narrative surrounding the Dominion Brothers reflects a broader theme of hope and transformation through sports. By nurturing growth, resilience, and community support, the team is not only setting the stage for success in the tournament but also paving the way for future stars of rugby in Fiji. This collective effort embodies the transformative power of sports to change lives, promote teamwork, and foster a supportive community environment.
