With Diwali fast approaching, the Pacific Recycling Foundation is urging the public to be mindful of festival waste, which poses a significant threat to the environment. Founder Amitesh Deo highlighted that while homes may appear clean during the festive season, much of the waste often ends up in rivers, drains, and other open spaces, creating an illusion of cleanliness.

Deo emphasized that true environmental stewardship requires more than convenience; it involves recognizing the responsibility we share for Fiji and the planet. He is calling on communities, businesses, and institutions to implement effective recycling systems and to responsibly manage waste. He expressed that symbolic gestures are insufficient; this Diwali represents a crucial opportunity for individuals and organizations to forge sustainable practices that can last beyond the celebrations.

His concerns echo previous warnings about the need for substantial action regarding waste management in Fiji, an issue he has been vocal about during various initiatives, including recent cleanup efforts where large quantities of waste were collected, revealing a concerning trend of negligence towards responsible waste disposal.

Deo’s message comes alongside broader initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability during Diwali. Recently, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission partnered with local religious organizations to encourage environmentally responsible practices among consumers, stressing the importance of minimizing waste and making ethical shopping decisions during the festival.

As the community gears up for the festivities, it’s a significant moment to reflect on sustainability practices and reinforce a commitment to environmental care. By fostering a culture of responsibility and accountability, not only can Fiji celebrate Diwali with pride, but it can also pave the way for healthier ecosystems and a more sustainable future.
