As the festival of Diwali approaches, kava vendors in Fiji are experiencing a notable increase in demand as locals prepare to celebrate the event. The Nausori Market is bustling with shoppers eager to purchase Fiji’s national drink, a vital element for family gatherings and celebrations during this festive period.

Parveen Prasad, the Manager at KELL Investment Fiji Limited, reported steady sales driven by both local demand and exports. In a bid to maintain the festive spirit, kava prices have seen slight reductions, with offerings priced at $90 now available for $88, and those previously selling at $110 reduced to $108. This strategic pricing aims to make kava more accessible for families celebrating together.

Owner of Narendra Prasad Enterprise, Narendra Prasad, noted a similar trend, indicating that an increasing number of people are choosing grog as part of their Diwali festivities. The atmosphere is filled with excitement as homes are decorated, and the spirit of togetherness is embodied in the sharing of kava at family gatherings, uniting communities during this special occasion.

Fiji’s Diwali celebration transcends its Hindu roots, with participation from diverse communities including iTaukei, Indo-Fijians, Rotumans, and others, showcasing the rich multicultural fabric of the nation. The blend of traditional Indian sweets, firecrackers, and decorations contributes to an overall sense of joy and celebration that bridges cultural divides.

While the joyous atmosphere is palpable, the Consumer Council of Fiji urges shoppers to remain vigilant in their purchasing. The busy Diwali season has historically led to complaints regarding price inconsistencies and product quality, prompting the Council to encourage consumers to shop wisely and ensure vendor reliability.

With Fiji’s kava industry on the rise, the current demand not only mirrors an appreciation for this cultural beverage but also represents potential growth for local farmers and businesses. Initiatives aimed at maintaining high-quality standards and enhancing production capabilities could herald a promising future for Fiji’s kava sector, reinforcing both economic sustainability and the cultural significance of kava in Fijian society.

This year’s celebrations offer a dual occasion for reflection on cultural heritage and community togetherness, with hopes for unity and prosperity across Fiji’s diverse population as lights illuminate homes and hearts during this festival of joy.
