The Office of the Divisional Commissioner for the North has announced that measures are being implemented to prepare for adverse wet weather conditions expected in the coming 48 hours.
Today, Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima convened with leaders from various essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and the Land Transport Authority. The meeting focused on finalizing operational plans and ensuring that adequate resources are in place to assist communities that may be affected by the weather.
The FRA reported that connecting roads across the island remain clear despite the heavy rain that occurred overnight, and accessibility has not been significantly impacted. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided a comprehensive forecast, helping stakeholders adjust their preparedness strategies.
The Ministry of Education has been advised to be ready to use schools as evacuation centers if necessary. Residents living in low-lying areas are encouraged to prepare by relocating to higher ground to minimize risks associated with flooding.
Authorities are also urging the public to limit unnecessary travel at night to enhance safety for both the residents and first responders. If residents have questions regarding evacuation centers or require assistance, they are instructed to contact local authorities or the police.
Commissioner Rainima has specifically advised farmers to relocate their livestock to higher ground and take precautions to safeguard their properties and livelihoods.
“We urge everyone to prioritize their safety during this time. Listen carefully to weather advisories and updates, and take early action to prepare, especially those in low-lying areas. Avoid unnecessary travel at night, and remember, your safety is our top priority. Stay calm, and do not hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed,” Rainima said.
