The situation surrounding Lynda Tabuya, the dismissed Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, continues to unfold as she awaits the outcome of a disciplinary review by the People’s Alliance (PA) party. Following a meeting held by the party’s executive committee at their headquarters in Suva, it has been confirmed that Ms. Tabuya will learn her fate within the next 21 days.
This marks Ms. Tabuya’s second disciplinary review within the party. Earlier this year, she faced a committee over serious allegations connected to a sex and drug scandal involving another minister, resulting in her removal as the party’s deputy leader. In March, the party publicly stated that these scandals had inflicted “potentially irreparable damage” to its reputation.
The current issue stems from a leaked explicit video that surfaced on Christmas Eve, which showed Ms. Tabuya dancing nude. She has acknowledged the video’s authenticity, explaining that it was originally meant for her estranged husband, Robert Semaan, from whom she divorced in 2016, according to investigations by FICAC. In the wake of the video’s release, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka dismissed her from her ministerial position on December 26. Notably, Mr. Rabuka participated in the recent executive committee meeting virtually.
The party’s general secretary, Sila Balawa, reaffirmed that the disciplinary process would align with the party’s constitution and emphasized the need for an independent investigation to maintain integrity and confidentiality. Ms. Tabuya will have a chance to present her perspective, and the committee aims to ensure that all sides are heard before reaching a conclusion.
It remains to be seen how this situation will develop, but the forthcoming 21 days will be crucial for both Ms. Tabuya and the People’s Alliance party. This disciplinary process highlights the party’s commitment to accountability and transparency, even as they navigate challenging circumstances.
This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing allegations firmly and fairly within political parties to uphold their integrity and the trust of the public. It is hoped that the outcome of this review will lead to constructive resolutions for all involved.
