Opposition MP Vijay Nath has voiced his concerns about the government’s handling of the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Rae, particularly regarding its effects on communities in Vanua Levu. Although initial reports suggest that the region experienced only limited damage, the heavy rainfall has resulted in flooding, prompting agricultural officials to assess the impact on local farms.
Nath has criticized the Minister’s decision to prioritize a visit to the Waiqele Airport upgrade over essential disaster response efforts. He emphasizes the urgency of delivering immediate relief, including food rations and tents, especially to those most affected in the Lau region. “The people of Fiji deserve a well-coordinated and timely disaster response,” Nath remarked, holding the government accountable for ensuring that timely aid reaches those in need.
This situation poses a significant challenge for the Coalition Government, which has issued warnings and coordinated recovery efforts but faces legitimate concerns regarding the promptness and effectiveness of its actions. The need for swift response is reiterated by Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Praveen Bala, who has also highlighted the government’s slow response to flooding issues in western regions, raising frustrations among residents who seek adequate support.
As communities navigate the challenges brought by natural disasters, it is imperative for the government to focus on urgent humanitarian needs rather than infrastructure projects. The persistent calls from opposition leaders reflect a broader demand for enhanced disaster response strategies, suggesting that this crisis could be a turning point in ensuring that affected communities receive the attention and resources necessary for recovery. There is hope that a more robust response framework will emerge, allowing for better support in the future.
