Murder Convict's Assault Raises Alarming Questions on Online Safety

Murderer Attacked in Jail: Who’s Really to Blame?

Edward Nand, a convicted murderer, faced an assault from another inmate at the Remand Centre earlier this week, resulting in injuries that prompted his attorney, Sunil Gosai, to make serious allegations against correction officers. Gosai claimed in court that the staff at the facility were accountable for the attack; however, the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has firmly rejected this assertion.

During a court appearance presided over by Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo, Nand was seen with visible injuries, including facial swelling and blood-stained bandages. The judge ordered that he receive prompt medical attention at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. The FCS maintains that Nand’s injuries resulted from a confrontation with another inmate, asserting that their medical unit subsequently treated him for his wounds.

Nand and his co-defendant, Salimoni Lagicere, were both convicted of murdering Narend Chand, who was allegedly lured to Fiji through a deceitful social media profile. Sentencing for both men is scheduled for March 7, 2025. This case raises significant concerns surrounding online safety and the risks involved in digital communications.

The recent incident with Nand emphasizes the broader implications of internet deception, serving as a reminder for the public to be vigilant when interacting with individuals online. While the situation is troubling, there is hope that the judicial system will effectively address these issues, bringing justice while enhancing awareness of online safety measures in the community.
