In 1973, approximately 60 people left the Commissioner Central’s office disappointed after seeking hurricane relief rations that were no longer available. Reports from The Fiji Times from March 1, 1973, indicate that the last distribution occurred between February 7 and 9, and officials announced no further rations would be issued, except in exceptional cases.

The group queuing at the office represented around 500 individuals living in villages and settlements throughout the Central Division. Residents, such as Filipe Naimawi from Nukutubu, who had brought a ration card indicating a return date of February 28, were shocked to find that no further food was distributed. Many villagers expressed their reliance on the hurricane relief due to crops not maturing since Hurricane Bebe.

Ilaitia Ceme shared that he was anticipating rations for 82 people in Nakelo Village, stating, “We too have planted food which hasn’t matured.” Another villager, Jai Narayan from Toga, highlighted his struggle as a father of 13 children anxiously waiting for rations. Moape Kalouwai from Dromuna in Kaba expressed frustration after traveling over 12 miles for food that he was suddenly told would not be available; he typically received assistance for travel costs, which was also denied this time.

Commissioner Central Ratu George Mataika attempted to clarify the situation, asserting that many in line had misunderstood the distribution cards as they had been misled by the stated dates. However, he stated that those who had received their rations already understood the terms and left once informed.

This incident underscores the challenges faced by communities in the aftermath of natural disasters, especially in times of resource shortages. Residents are urged to communicate clearly with local authorities for better clarity on assistance availability in similar future situations. Given the strong sense of community and resilience demonstrated by the villagers, there is hope that continued support and proper communication can improve outcomes for families impacted by such crises.
