Fijians residing in Canada are poised to enhance trade, investment, and business prospects as the new Canadian High Commission in Fiji, coupled with direct flights between the nations, fortifies their bilateral relationship. Randeep Sarai, Canada’s Secretary of State for International Development, emphasized that these developments pave the way for Fijian-born Canadians to play an active role in Fiji’s economy.
The introduction of direct flights between Fiji and Vancouver has eliminated previous connectivity challenges, thereby facilitating easier travel for business leaders, investors, and tourists from both countries. Sarai expressed optimism about these changes, stating that the aim is to boost bilateral interaction and investment by 50% within five years, and 100% in ten years, highlighting that enhanced connectivity unlocks a wealth of opportunities for businesses.
The newly established High Commission is anticipated to provide essential support and resources for companies interested in expanding their operations in Fiji. Sarai also noted that many Fijian-born Canadians might consider returning to their homeland for work, retirement, or to maintain businesses while exploring fresh investment ventures from abroad.
Sarai pointed out the interest of Canadian firms, particularly in sectors like mining, tourism, construction, and technology, in further investments in Fiji. He observed an increasing curiosity surrounding resort development and enhanced tourism collaboration, alongside potential technology partnerships led by Canadian innovators of Fijian descent.
An expected collaboration between the High Commission and the Canada Fiji Business Council is set to deepen in the months ahead, with initiatives aimed at connecting Canadian investors with Fijian counterparts to foster two-way trade and partnerships. The focus is on mutual prosperity, especially with trade between Fiji and Canada projected to reach $53 million in 2024, nearly doubling from the previous year, and growth is anticipated to escalate further.
In addition to trade, tourism has seen a significant surge, with the number of Fijians traveling to Canada rising from around 10,000 to over 20,000 following the initiation of direct flights by Fiji Airways to Vancouver. Secretary Sarai believes that these strengthened people-to-people connections, alongside robust diplomatic and commercial relations, will continue to propel investment and economic opportunities for Fiji in North America.
