Digital mapping training for agricultural officers has successfully facilitated new pineapple exports to New Zealand, marking a significant advancement for the Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways, and Sugar Industry in enhancing frontline support through innovative technology.
Last year, officers from the Land Resources Planning Division conducted training sessions across Ba Province, in locations including Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, and Nadi. During these sessions, participants were taught how to utilize Survey123 and ArcGIS for effective farm data collection. This training proved pivotal as it resulted in a comprehensive survey of pineapples, thereby enabling the successful shipment of locally produced pineapples to New Zealand. This export not only showcases local agricultural potential but also generates new income opportunities for farmers.
Recently, the ministry wrapped up a Basic GIS and Survey123 training course in Tailevu Province. This initiative has further bolstered the officers’ digital mapping and reporting abilities, equipping them to better monitor crop production and farm activities. The ministry emphasizes that improved data analysis will enhance planning efforts and ultimately increase agricultural output. Moreover, it aims to provide farmers with greater access to both local and international markets.
Looking ahead, the ministry plans to extend this valuable training initiative to other divisions throughout Fiji, promising ongoing support and development in the agricultural sector. This progressive approach reflects a positive shift towards improving farmers’ livelihoods and reinforcing the agricultural industry’s role in Fiji’s economy.
