Diabetes Fiji is grappling with ongoing funding challenges, as highlighted by Executive Director Kini Marawa, despite receiving some limited grant assistance from the government. Marawa emphasizes the organization’s commitment to fostering stronger collaborations with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. Their aim is to enhance school programs and incorporate diabetes and non-communicable disease (NCD) education into the national curriculum, viewing this as a critical component of long-term preventive strategies.

In their quest for sustainable support, Diabetes Fiji has submitted multiple policy and budget proposals. These requests include suggestions for redirecting excise duty revenue to health organizations such as theirs, which would bolster community outreach and operational capabilities. However, Marawa notes that these proposals have not yet been realized.

Additionally, Diabetes Fiji is pending the release of a crucial survey report from the Ministry of Health, initially anticipated between November and December. Marawa underscores the importance of this report for informed decision-making moving forward. He is also seeking clarification on the status of the National NCD and Wellness Strategic Plan, pointing out that improved alignment and coordination within the Ministry of Health remains a pressing concern that the organization consistently raises during discussions with health officials.

Despite the hurdles faced, Marawa’s persistence in advocating for funding and strategic partnerships reflects a hopeful outlook for enhancing diabetes education and prevention initiatives in Fiji. The organization’s efforts could potentially lead to a more proactive approach to public health in the region, creating a healthier future for communities.
