Wainikiti Latuvere Leana has proven to be a model of resilience and determination throughout her educational journey. This past Friday, the 26-year-old celebrated her graduation, earning a degree in Tourism Studies and Management from the School of Business and Economics at the University of Fiji.
Ms. Leana hails from Voua Village in Nadroga and has familial connections to Balenabelo Village. Currently, she is the manager of Coastline Fiji, situated in Sigatoka. After completing her high school education, she spent seven years working at Jacks of Fiji before she felt inspired to pursue higher education, motivated especially by her late sister, Savaira Basiyalo.
“She was the one who motivated me. I wish she were here to witness my achievement,” said Ms. Leana, reflecting on the personal drive that shaped her journey.
Managing work, studies, and family responsibilities proved to be a formidable challenge, but Ms. Leana stayed dedicated to her goals. She often prioritized her education over social and religious events, stating, “I skipped social functions and church services to complete assignments and study.” She made time to listen to sermons on the radio later, showcasing her commitment to both her education and her faith.
Throughout this process, she faced mental exhaustion and sleepless nights filled with assignments and presentations. Despite the demands, her determination held strong. “A lot of effort went into balancing everything. It was challenging, but in the end, it was all worth it,” she remarked.
In expressing her gratitude, Ms. Leana acknowledged her family’s steadfast support, dedicating her accomplishments to her late sister, as well as her parents and siblings. Her mother, Makereta Tupou, shared her pride during the graduation ceremony, tearfully remembering the struggles they had faced together. “I cried watching her walk across the stage to receive her certificate. It was a proud moment. We faced many challenges, but with God’s strength, we overcame them,” Ms. Tupou stated.
