Fiji is currently grappling with a significant shortage of dental professionals, as there is only one dentist for approximately every 13,000 individuals, well above the recommended ratio of one dentist per 10,000 people. Currently, Fiji has a mere 71 registered dentists, which is causing major concerns regarding access to dental care within the public health system.

The Ministry of Health is actively working on workforce planning to confront this pressing issue; however, introducing new dental officer positions requires formal approval based on reliable data. Dr. Jone Turagaluvu, the head of Oral Health, stated that while all current dental officer roles are filled, additional resources are urgently needed to support the population’s dental health needs.

To remediate this crisis, Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa stressed the importance of reviewing staffing establishments. He stated that a framework would be established in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), utilizing data from the last 5-10 years to assess the current workforce and demographics across various health centers.

Efforts to address the growing need for dental care are critical, especially in light of previous reports highlighting challenges in children’s dental health due to poor dietary habits and limited access to dental care. The school-aged population has seen an uptick in complications, with many requiring permanent tooth extractions. This situation underlines the need for improved public health initiatives that prioritize dental hygiene awareness and better access to dental services.

While the statistics paint a grim picture, there is a concerted push from health officials and the Ministry to resolve these issues, indicating a hopeful trajectory for improvements in Fiji’s oral healthcare landscape. By increasing resources and strategic planning, there is potential for enhanced access to vital dental services that could significantly benefit the health of the Fijian population.
