The Central Division is currently experiencing a dengue fever outbreak, as announced by the Ministry of Health. Since January 1, 2025, there have been 1,090 confirmed cases up to March 23, surpassing the expected counts for the same period last year. The Ministry noted a concerning surge in cases particularly in the Navua, Suva, and Rewa subdivisions. Additionally, Tailevu and Naitasiri subdivisions have reported increased hospital admissions at Korovou and Vunidawa hospitals, respectively. The Colonial War Memorial Hospital has also seen higher admission rates than anticipated.

In response to this outbreak, the Ministry of Health is implementing its Dengue Outbreak Response Plan, which includes enhanced situational monitoring and ensuring that healthcare facilities are stocked with essential medications, including IV fluids and pain relief. Public health officials are urging community participation in preventive measures, emphasizing the critical role residents play in eliminating mosquito breeding sites to mitigate the outbreak’s impact.

Historically, dengue fever cases peak during Fiji’s rainy season, which runs from November to April, aided by favorable conditions for mosquito breeding after heavy rainfall. While the Central Division is grappling with this latest outbreak, it is noteworthy that the Western Division previously faced a severe situation earlier this year, highlighting the necessity for nationwide vigilance and proactive health measures to combat this pervasive health issue.

The ongoing public health response signifies hope, as past community engagement initiatives have been shown to effectively control the spread of similar outbreaks. With continued awareness and cooperation from residents, there is optimism that the current situation can be managed, ensuring the health and safety of individuals in affected areas.
