The Ministry of Health has reported an expected increase in dengue fever cases as health facilities continue to document new infections, attributing this surge to recent heavy rainfall and flooding across the nation. From January 1 to May 4, a total of 8,708 confirmed cases have been recorded, with the Western Division leading with 4,357 cases. The Central Division has reported 2,092 cases, the Northern Division 2,048 cases, and the Eastern Division has noted 211 cases.

Hospital admissions due to dengue fever have also risen, with 1,768 reported to date. Among these, the Western Division has seen the highest number of admissions at 986, which is concerning given that two dengue-related fatalities have been confirmed in this division. The Northern Division is also facing challenges, reporting 422 admissions and similar mortality figures.

In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services is active in implementing public health interventions, including awareness programs aimed at educating the public on preventive measures against dengue fever. Health inspectors are conducting inspections and issuing fines for properties where mosquitoes are found breeding, enforcing the Public Health Act Cap 111.

The Ministry strongly urges the public to remain cautious and follow advisories related to dengue fever, which are being communicated through various media platforms. Engaging the community is essential as they play a pivotal role in managing the outbreak by taking precautionary measures and eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites.

Previous outbreaks in the current rainy season highlight that timely community action and awareness can significantly mitigate the effects of dengue fever. With ongoing health campaigns and proactive measures from authorities, there is hope that these combined efforts can help control the outbreak and safeguard public health during this challenging period. Community cooperation will be vital in overcoming this public health concern.
