The Ministry of Health has launched an action plan in response to a dengue fever outbreak declared in the Western Division, which has seen 200 cases in just 31 days. Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, emphasized the importance of collaboration with divisional and sub-divisional heads to tackle the surge in cases.

Dr. Tudravu noted that the rainy season from October to April typically leads to an increase in dengue cases, particularly following adverse weather events. Given the rise in reported cases exceeding expected levels, divisional health teams have been mobilized to promote early detection and treatment. The ministry has also trained outbreak response teams to efficiently handle investigations and responses during such health crises.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about dengue fever precautions and seek prompt medical attention if they exhibit symptoms, which can range from flu-like signs to more severe reactions. Vulnerable age groups, notably those between 10 and 29 years, are among the most affected.

In light of these developments, it is crucial for community members to understand the risks associated with dengue fever, especially in times of heavy rainfall. Taking proactive measures can significantly mitigate the outbreak’s impact. By fostering awareness and preparedness, the health ministry aims to reduce the number of cases and protect the community’s well-being.
