At the break of dawn, while most of Suva lays asleep, 63-year-old Kalesi Rokovusoni, affectionately known as Qei, is already preparing for her day at 4 a.m. Her dedication to her craft sees her setting up a small food stall at the Government Buildings, a familiar spot she has occupied for over six years.
Despite its modest size, Qei’s table is a haven for those seeking comforting meals, offering popular items such as tea, roti, pudding, and lunch options that have become daily staples for public servants and locals alike. Qei expresses her gratitude, saying, “I am grateful to the Government for giving me this space, and I thank all the people who continue to support me every day.”
The small business she runs goes beyond mere profit; it plays a crucial role in supporting her family and fulfilling her responsibilities towards her church. As she rightly puts it, “Every coin I earn helps someone in my family.”
Her journey has not been without hardships. The early mornings, lengthy hours, and the effort required to cater to numerous customers demand significant dedication and resilience.
