Former Papua New Guinea (PNG) Kumuls captain David Mead has expressed a strong interest in assuming the head coaching role of the PNG Orchids, following the recent departure of Tahnee Norris from the position. The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) and Norris mutually decided to part ways due to a decline in the team’s world ranking, dropping from fifth to sixth during her tenure. This change comes as the Orchids gear up for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Papua New Guinea, Australia, and New Zealand.
Mead took to social media to announce his candidacy, addressing the PNGRFL directly with an assurance of his willingness to lead the team. In his post, he mentioned being in contact with potential assistant coaches, hinting at the involvement of Justin Olam, a former PNG international and NRL centre, which has sparked excitement among fans regarding their joint potential to enhance the Orchids’ coaching staff.
The Orchids, under new leadership, are now focused on revitalizing their performance ahead of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup. PNGRFL chairman Sandis Tsaka acknowledged Norris’s contributions to the team and the development of women’s rugby league in the country, emphasizing the necessity for improved results as the tournament approaches.
Despite facing challenges in consistency and experiencing back-to-back losses against stronger international teams, Norris reflected positively on the progression of young talents in the squad. The emergence of these players on the international stage highlights the solid groundwork laid during her tenure.
As the search for a new head coach commences, the PNGRFL is committed to reversing the Orchids’ ranking decline and elevating standards in preparation for the World Cup. This coaching transition represents an important opportunity for the Orchids to harness their developmental progress and translate it into competitive success on a global scale. Fans and stakeholders are eager for updates as the team embarks on this next chapter.
