Many young sex workers are often compelled to sell drugs, according to Fiji Council of Social Services executive director Vani Catanasiga.

Ms. Catanasiga explained that these sex workers are mentored by experienced individuals and are pushed into drug dealing when they can no longer attract customers.

“Drug trafficking and sex work frequently operate together,” she noted.

“It creates an environment where young individuals are lured and sometimes forced into a life of exploitation.”

Ms. Catanasiga mentioned that for most sex workers, it is a desperate attempt to earn money.

“If you listen to the stories of sex workers, you will find out that some individuals depend on them.”

“They rely on these sex workers to fund their education and support elderly parents and siblings.”

Ms. Catanasiga highlighted that many such stories have emerged from Ovalau.
