The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a flash flood warning for all small streams and low-lying areas on Vanua Levu, and a flood alert is also in effect for similar regions on Viti Levu. This severe weather is a result of Tropical Cyclone Rae, which is currently positioned to the northeast of Vanua Levu and is expected to intensify as it tracks south-southwest toward the Lau group.

The ongoing weather conditions pose significant risks, with the likelihood of localized flooding affecting roads, river crossings, and low-water bridges. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to heed safety warnings and stay vigilant, particularly those in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, as well as Viti Levu, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands such as Moala and the Southern Lau Group.

In light of these warnings, the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has reminded the public to avoid crossing or swimming in any flood-affected waters, especially where water levels exceed knee height. Furthermore, strong wind warnings are in place for several regions, heightening the need for caution during this tumultuous weather period.

As the situation develops, the authorities are prepared to respond to emergencies. It is crucial for communities to actively monitor updates from relevant agencies and act accordingly, ensuring safety for themselves and their families.

Overall, while the weather poses challenges, the readiness of local services and the public’s adherence to safety advisories serve as positive aspects that could mitigate potential risks associated with these adverse conditions.
