Tropical Cyclone Rae continues to be the primary concern for Fiji as it moves southward, currently classified as a Category 2 cyclone. The Fiji Meteorological Service Director, Misaeli Funaki, has confirmed that Cyclone Rae is situated approximately 40 kilometers west of Vanuabalavu and is expected to pass through Lau waters later today, exiting Fiji’s waters by tomorrow morning.

As Cyclone Rae progresses, it has brought strong winds and significant rainfall to the region. Wind gusts have been recorded at Udu Point reaching 94 kilometers per hour, with Vanuabalavu reporting gusts of up to 72 kilometers per hour. The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued warnings for heavy rain and strong winds, emphasizing the need for residents, especially those in the Lau Lomaviti group, to stay alert. Flooding in low-lying areas is a concern due to the anticipated heavy rainfall.

In addition to Cyclone Rae, a new tropical system is developing to the far northwest of Fiji, which Funaki noted requires close monitoring as its weather patterns, particularly heavy rain, may also impact Fiji in the days ahead. This situation highlights the importance of community preparedness and solidarity in facing severe weather events. Historical experiences with similar weather disturbances have demonstrated that collective action and vigilance can substantially mitigate the impacts of storms, and local leaders are encouraging residents to secure their properties and stay informed.

With the storms presenting both challenges and opportunities for resilience, there is hope that the community can come together to navigate the impending severe weather, drawing on their history of cooperation and support in the face of adversity.
