Ioan Cunningham, the former head coach of the Wales women’s rugby team, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Vodafone Fijiana XV rugby team, according to the Fiji Rugby Union. This decision follows a thorough search for a successor to Mosese Rauluni, who stepped down after a demanding season.
Cunningham’s coaching career includes a notable three-year period with the Welsh side, during which he played a pivotal role in professionalizing the team and securing their first win over Australia. Although he encountered challenges in 2024, he remains proud of the strides taken to enhance team competitiveness and performance.
As Cunningham embarks on his new journey, he will lead the Fijiana XVs into their Rugby World Cup campaign set to occur from August 22 to September 27 in England. The Fijiana team is poised to face tough opponents, including Canada, Scotland, and his former team, Wales, in Pool B.
Bringing a wealth of coaching experience, including time with the Wales Under-20 team and club-level experience with the Scarlets, Cunningham is known for his effective communication and strong focus on performance outcomes. These qualities will be essential as he sets clear expectations and develops a strategic plan for the national women’s side.
This transition in leadership presents a meaningful opportunity for the Fijiana XVs as they gear up for the World Cup, sparking renewed optimism about harnessing their potential and elevating their international standing. Under Cunningham’s guidance, the team aims to build on previous achievements and aspire for a commendable performance on the global stage.
