The title of Tui Nayau is set to be postponed until the forthcoming ceremonies for the Tui Lau and Sau ni Vanua ko Lau are finalized. Family representative Niumaia Gucake, who bears the heraldic title of Matakicicia, explained that the installation of Tui Nayau at Narocivo Village is rooted in traditions that predate the arrival of Ma’afu to the Lau Islands.

Gucake noted that historically, the islands within Lau were not unified under a single province; the area known as Lau was previously referred to as Lau Lewena, consisting mainly of Lakeba Island and Ono-i-Lau. The significance of the Tui Nayau title, established prior to Ma’afu’s influence, was highlighted during the ceremonial preparations. The title symbolizes deep cultural traditions and leadership lineage, as Gucake pointed out that Lakeba sought a chief from Nayau during this historical period.

Understanding this lineage, the ceremony will be conducted separately for the titles of Sau ni Vanua ko Lau and Tui Lau, which reside in Lakeba. This decision reflects the cultural significance associated with each title, ensuring respect and adherence to custom.

After the completion of the ceremony in Lakeba, Ratu Tevita Mara will formally be recognized as Tui Nayau, as well as assume the roles of Sau ni Vanua ko Lau and Tui Lau.

This momentous occasion not only highlights the importance of preserving cultural heritage but also shows a commitment to strengthening community ties and traditions, an aspiration echoed in the emotions and activities surrounding similar past installations. The anticipation around these upcoming events fills the community with hope for the new era of leadership under Ratu Tevita, with a future full of possibilities and cultural growth as they unite to honor their heritage.
