Adi Tulia Nacola stands as a remarkable example of young iTaukei women making significant strides in the business sector. This serial entrepreneur, known for her ventures ranging from furniture making to boat building, has expanded her horizons into film production.
Nacola has successfully authored, produced, and directed her first short film titled “Bubu Belo” in collaboration with Bure Productions, a Fiji-based film label. This 25-minute film highlights the experiences of two central characters, Bubu and Tamara, who reside in a quaint wooden cottage by the sea. The film, conducted in the iTaukei language, captures themes of resilience and self-sufficiency, as Bubu educates Tamara on the importance of fishing and cultivating their own food.
Set in Verevere Village, Ra—Nacola’s hometown—the story evolves when a figure from their past arrives, forcing Bubu to confront a challenging decision. The film delves into the broader issue of urban migration’s impact on indigenous communities, emphasizing the struggle between embracing city opportunities and remaining connected to one’s ancestral land.
In her own words, Adi Tulia asserts, “While opportunities may exist in the major cities, there is significant value in finding prospects within the village and honoring our roots.” She is a passionate advocate for storytelling and the exchange of traditional knowledge among families. “Bubu Belo” aims to foster a connection between elders and youths, serving as a bridge that includes both fluent speakers of the iTaukei language and those who are still learning.
The film underscores the vital role of storytelling in educating younger generations about respecting one another and the environment. The premiere of “Bubu Belo” is scheduled to take place at Film Fiji’s office in Suva next week. This event will be followed by community screenings in various villages in Ra, supported by Film Fiji, with the goal of highlighting the significance of cultural heritage and identity.
