A disturbing video that gained traction on social media has brought to light the ongoing issue of drug use among young boys in Suva, specifically near family homes along Robertson Road. Residents, who have been living with the consequences of this crisis for some time, describe their experiences with fear and insecurity as they witness these minors engaging in drug use in broad daylight.
One concerned resident shared, “Sometimes, we don’t sleep well because of the fear we have for them. We’re scared they might do something to us. We’re living in our homes, but we don’t feel safe.” Reports of drugs, loud arguments, and public disturbances have taken a heavy toll on the neighborhood, prompting the Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, to address the community directly. After observing the situation, he characterized it as “very serious” and emphasized the need for immediate action, including increased police patrols in the area.
Prime Minister Rabuka underlined that the response to this situation is multifaceted, stressing the importance of public health and safety, especially concerning the future of the youth. He called on the local community to collaborate and collectively address the drug crisis, echoing sentiments from previous discussions about rising drug use in Fiji. The Prime Minister’s call for action comes in alignment with ongoing police efforts to curb drug-related activities, following reports of drug proliferation that have captured public attention.
Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that officers have been instructed to enhance their presence and crack down on illegal activities in the area. Community members are encouraged to report suspicious behaviors as investigations continue.
While immediate responses are hopeful signs of progress, residents hold their breath, wanting to see that the government’s promises translate into tangible plans for change. They aspire for a neighborhood where they can feel safe and secure, without the looming threat of drug-related activities.
The shared experiences from different communities across Fiji underscore a growing movement towards collective action against drug culture invading their youth’s lives. This renewed focus on safety not only provides hope for Robertson Road but resonates with the broader community in their efforts to foster a safer, drug-free environment for future generations.
