Former Prime Minister and leader of the Fiji Labour Party, Mahendra Chaudhry, has voiced serious concerns regarding the current state of leadership within the Coalition Government. He suggests that there is a growing crisis of confidence among the populace, as many perceive government officials to be self-serving and lacking in ethics and integrity.
According to Chaudhry, as the government marks two years in power, it has displayed a disappointing unwillingness to confront the significant challenges that Fiji faces. He criticized the government for what he describes as acts of cronyism that undermine the integrity of constitutional roles, particularly referencing the controversial appointment of the FICAC Commissioner, which is now under review by a Commission of Inquiry.
Chaudhry highlighted specific incidents that have raised alarm among citizens, such as the incidents involving the Fijian navy, notably the damaging of the RFNS Puamau, a patrol boat gifted by Australia. The mishandling of this vessel on its inaugural journey, along with subsequent issues, has left the public deeply concerned about government competence.
He further expressed that the government’s policies have detrimentally affected the average citizen, particularly with the rising cost of living, inadequate healthcare funding, housing shortages, and insufficient support for education, agriculture, and small businesses.
