Transport and Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has announced a comprehensive review of public service vehicle (PSV) monitoring operations following a significant minibus accident at Laucala Beach, Suva, on Sunday. The Minister, describing the crash as “terrible,” emphasized the urgent need to address driver behavior, particularly concerning issues of speeding and fatigue.
The minibus collision, which occurred just minutes before it was reported in the news, raised numerous alarms regarding PSV safety practices. Minister Tuisawau noted, “While there could be various reasons for the crash, one major factor certainly points to over-speeding. Regardless of whether the driver fell asleep, the onus of responsibility lies with the driver.”
He stressed that PSV drivers must be alert, sober, and well-rested at all times, as they have a crucial duty of care for their passengers. “Negligence can lead to fatal consequences,” he remarked, calling for the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to enhance its oversight measures from licensing to roadside enforcement.
In light of the crash, Tuisawau has instructed a swift response to implement a crackdown on unsafe practices in coordination with the LTA and the Police, aiming for immediate improvements in public transportation safety. He expects to receive a detailed report from authorities within a day, outlining further measures that will be taken to prevent similar accidents in the future.
