Transport and Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has announced a comprehensive review of public service vehicle (PSV) monitoring operations following a significant minibus accident at Laucala Beach, Suva, on Sunday. The Minister, describing the crash as “terrible,” emphasized the urgent need to address driver behavior, particularly concerning issues of speeding and fatigue.
The minibus collision, which occurred just minutes before it was reported in the news, raised numerous alarms regarding PSV safety practices. Minister Tuisawau noted, “While there could be various reasons for the crash, one major factor certainly points to over-speeding. Regardless of whether the driver fell asleep, the onus of responsibility lies with the driver.”
He stressed that PSV drivers must be alert, sober, and well-rested at all times, as they have a crucial duty of care for their passengers. “Negligence can lead to fatal consequences,” he remarked, calling for the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to enhance its oversight measures from licensing to roadside enforcement.
In light of the crash, Tuisawau has instructed a swift response to implement a crackdown on unsafe practices in coordination with the LTA and the Police, aiming for immediate improvements in public transportation safety. He expects to receive a detailed report from authorities within a day, outlining further measures that will be taken to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The incident has sparked increased public outcry for stricter penalties and enforcement to improve overall road safety in Fiji. This heightened awareness comes at a critical time, as recent statistics indicate a rising trend in PSV-related accidents, underscoring the necessity for enhanced safety protocols and driver accountability.
In reviewing recent incidents, such as a serious accident involving a container trailer and a minibus that occurred earlier this week, the ongoing conversations around PSV safety highlight an urgent societal concern. Authorities have been proactive in responding to these incidents, as demonstrated by calls from police officials for all PSV drivers to enhance their vigilance on the roads.
While challenges persist, there is a collective hope that the government’s renewed focus on PSV safety will pave the way for improved training and adherence to regulations, contributing to safer travel for all citizens. Increased vigilance and a strong commitment to road safety could lead to a future with fewer accidents, ensuring that every passenger arrives at their destination safely.
