Professor Jon Fraenkel, a political scientist at Victoria University of Wellington, has called the conduct of Judge David Ashton-Lewis “a disgraceful interference with Fiji politics” in relation to the ongoing Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Fraenkel argues that the findings of the inquiry, which he asserts are politically motivated, are detrimental to Fiji, both financially and politically.

Fraenkel points out that the judge’s remarks regarding “hunting out the crocodiles in the pond” suggest a personal agenda aimed at dismantling the political aspirations of Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica. He believes this approach compromises the integrity of the COI’s report, which adopts a broad and indiscriminate method in detailing allegations against various individuals, including some that may lack credible legal grounding.

The inquiry has implicated nine senior officials, with allegations ranging from lying under oath to obstructing justice, indicating deeper issues of political interference that risk damaging the public’s trust in governmental processes. Fraenkel’s critique extends to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption itself, claiming that it is plagued by corruption and is in dire need of reform.

Previous articles regarding the COI have highlighted the public’s aspirations for increased transparency and accountability within Fiji’s political framework. There is hope that the ongoing inquiry leads to significant reforms, fostering ethical standards and restoring confidence in Fiji’s governance. As the scrutiny continues, there is cautious optimism that the outcomes of this inquiry will catalyze a much-needed transformation in the political landscape, emphasizing integrity and accountability across all levels of government.

This situation presents an essential opportunity for Fiji, where the potential for reform could not only rectify past grievances but also establish a more ethical and transparent governance structure, reinforcing citizens’ trust in their institutions.
