Former Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Kalaveti Ravu, and Tekata Toaisi, the Ministry’s Regional Northern Manager, appeared in court today for a pre-trial conference at the Suva Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Magistrate Jeremaia Savou. Ravu is facing allegations of obstructing a ministerial investigation into the illegal trade of a prohibited species of beche-de-mer. Toaisi has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which involve aiding Ravu in this misconduct during July and August of last year.

Ravu’s legal representation is provided by lawyer Lavi Rokoika, while Toaisi is represented by Joji Cakau. Both defendants had their bail extended and their case was adjourned, with both lawyers indicating their readiness for trial.

This case has been brought forth by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), highlighting the ongoing efforts to uphold integrity and accountability within public service. The legal process will further explore the allegations against Ravu, which claim he interfered with a legitimate investigation regarding the illegal beche-de-mer trade, a critical issue concerning environmental protection and resource management.

The next stage in the proceedings is a scheduled pre-trial conference, which will likely provide further clarity on the upcoming trial set for February of next year. The court’s commitment to ensuring a transparent process is a positive step forward, reinforcing the importance of accountability in governance.

As the legal process unfolds, there is hope for a more transparent governmental framework and assurance to the public that issues of corruption and environmental abuse will be addressed.
