The Suva High Court has sided with the State, mandating the forfeiture of FJD $52,312.24 from the bank account of former military officer Ledua Biuvuli Matai. The funds were classified as tainted property, related to a broader investigation into fraudulent activities amounting to over $467,000.

Justice Chaitanya Lakshman delivered the ruling following an uncontested affidavit submitted by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This case stems from allegations that Mr. Matai approved 76 fraudulent transactions from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) to a business tied to his wife and daughter-in-law, totaling significant sums.

The seized funds will be transferred to the State’s Forfeited Assets Fund as part of efforts to counteract corruption. Additionally, Mr. Matai and his wife are facing separate criminal charges connected to the same case in the Suva Magistrates’ Court.

This situation elucidates the continued commitment of FICAC to tackle corruption within public service, reinforcing the necessity for accountability and ethical standards in government roles. As these proceedings unfold, there is a hopeful prospect that justice will be served, restoring public trust in institutional integrity and governance.
