Sanjay Kaba, Managing Director of Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Limited, has successfully had his second bail variation application approved by the Suva Magistrates Court. Today’s court ruling permits Kaba to surrender his passport, a decision made in line with conditions set during a prior court session.
Kaba faces serious charges from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) related to obtaining an unjust financial advantage. These allegations involve his actions while serving as a board member of Telecom Fiji Limited and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited, where he purportedly bid for a lucrative tender through his own company, earning over $766,000 between June 2022 and July 2023 without disclosing his directorial interests.
In previous proceedings, Kaba expressed intentions to travel internationally, which is now feasible as the court has lifted a temporary stop departure order for him to travel between March 1 and March 18, 2025. To fulfill his bail conditions, Kaba has deposited $75,000 into the Judiciary Trust Account and has also surrendered his mother’s passport as collateral.
The case is scheduled to be adjourned until April 3, highlighting ongoing issues concerning accountability and integrity within corporate governance. As efforts increase to combat corruption, Kaba’s situation emphasizes the challenge of maintaining ethical standards in both the public and private sectors.
As the next court appearance draws near, there is a renewed sense of hope for a resolution that reinforces transparency and accountability in Fiji’s governance. The outcome of this case could set a vital precedent for future ethical leadership practices in the region, fostering a culture that prioritizes integrity.
